Why Are There Two Systems?

Storage manufacturers use decimal (SI) units (1 KB = 1000 bytes), while operating systems traditionally use binary (IEC) units (1 KiB = 1024 bytes). This is why a "500 GB" drive shows as ~465 GiB in your OS.

About the Byte Converter

Convert between data storage units instantly with our free byte converter. Whether you're working with file sizes, storage capacity, or data transfer rates, this tool handles all conversions between bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and beyond.

Supported Units

  • Decimal (SI) Units — Kilobyte (KB), Megabyte (MB), Gigabyte (GB), Terabyte (TB), Petabyte (PB), Exabyte (EB) — using base 1000
  • Binary (IEC) Units — Kibibyte (KiB), Mebibyte (MiB), Gibibyte (GiB), Tebibyte (TiB), Pebibyte (PiB), Exbibyte (EiB) — using base 1024
  • Bit Units — Bit (b), Kilobit (Kb), Megabit (Mb), Gigabit (Gb), Terabit (Tb) — for network speeds and data rates

Features

  • Instant Conversion — Results update as you type
  • All Units View — See your value converted to all units simultaneously
  • File Size Calculator — Add up multiple file sizes quickly
  • Transfer Time Calculator — Estimate download/upload times
  • Storage Usage Calculator — Visualize disk space usage
  • SI vs IEC Support — Properly handles both decimal and binary units

Understanding KB vs KiB

The difference between SI (decimal) and IEC (binary) units matters:

  • 1 KB (kilobyte) = 1,000 bytes — used by storage manufacturers
  • 1 KiB (kibibyte) = 1,024 bytes — used by operating systems

This is why a "1 TB" hard drive shows as approximately 931 GiB in Windows — the manufacturer uses decimal units, while Windows displays binary units.
