Decimal (SI) Units - Base 1000
| Unit | Symbol | Bytes |
|---|---|---|
| Kilobyte | KB | 1,000 |
| Megabyte | MB | 1,000,000 |
| Gigabyte | GB | 1,000,000,000 |
| Terabyte | TB | 1,000,000,000,000 |
| Petabyte | PB | 1,000,000,000,000,000 |
| Exabyte | EB | 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 |
Binary (IEC) Units - Base 1024
| Unit | Symbol | Bytes |
|---|---|---|
| Kibibyte | KiB | 1,024 |
| Mebibyte | MiB | 1,048,576 |
| Gibibyte | GiB | 1,073,741,824 |
| Tebibyte | TiB | 1,099,511,627,776 |
| Pebibyte | PiB | 1,125,899,906,842,624 |
| Exbibyte | EiB | 1,152,921,504,606,846,976 |
Why Are There Two Systems?
Storage manufacturers use decimal (SI) units (1 KB = 1000 bytes), while operating systems traditionally use binary (IEC) units (1 KiB = 1024 bytes). This is why a "500 GB" drive shows as ~465 GiB in your OS.

Common Conversions
| From | To | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | MB | 1,000 MB |
| 1 GiB | MiB | 1,024 MiB |
| 1 TB | GB | 1,000 GB |
| 100 Mbps | MB/s | 12.5 MB/s |
| 1 GiB | GB | 1.074 GB |
Understanding KB vs KiB
The difference between SI (decimal) and IEC (binary) units matters:
- 1 KB (kilobyte) = 1,000 bytes — used by storage manufacturers
- 1 KiB (kibibyte) = 1,024 bytes — used by operating systems
This is why a "1 TB" hard drive shows as approximately 931 GiB in Windows — the manufacturer uses decimal units, while Windows displays binary units.
Data Transfer Speed Reference

| 5G | ~1 Gbps | ~8 seconds |
| Home Fiber | 100 Mbps | ~80 seconds |
| Gigabit Ethernet | 1 Gbps | ~8 seconds |
